These crochet puppy baby booties turn a simple pair of soft slippers into little puppy faces. Cream yarn, caramel floppy ears, and embroidered features create a sweet handmade gift for a baby shower or a keepsake photo.

Hook Size

Start with a 3.5 mm crochet hook.

The fabric should be flexible and close enough to hold the embroidered details. Check the sole size before making the upper.

Yarn

Use light-weight yarn, category 3, in a smooth, washable acrylic or soft cotton-acrylic blend.

Approximate quantities for one pair:

Cream: 70–90 yards
Caramel: 10–15 yards
Fine black yarn: Approximately 2 yards

Use the same yarn weight for the cream booties and caramel ears. A finer black yarn helps keep the facial details small and neat.

Before You Start

Gauge

Starting gauge: 20 sc stitches and 22 rows = approximately 4 inches, measured in a relaxed single crochet swatch.

Wash and dry the swatch according to the yarn label before measuring.

The completed sole is your main size checkpoint. Working in rounds may produce a different result from your flat swatch.

Sizing

Measure from the baby’s heel to the longest toe. Allow approximately ¼–½ inch beyond the foot length, then check the actual fit.

This pattern provides one size, targeting a sole approximately 3½–3¾ inches long. It does not cover every baby from 3 to 12 months.

Use measurements rather than an age label to decide whether the size is suitable.

Joined Rounds

Join each round with a sl st to its first stitch. Do not turn between rounds.

The starting ch 1 and joining sl st do not count as stitches.

Begin each new round in the same stitch as the join. Move the stitch marker to the first stitch of each round.

Pair Construction

Make both booties with the same instructions. There is no separate left or right shoe.

Keep the beginning of the round at the heel. The decreases will shape the toe at the opposite end.

Crochet Puppy Baby Booties: Step-by-Step Instructions

Part 1 — Make the Oval Soles

With cream yarn, ch 14.

Round 1:

Work 2 sc in the second chain from the hook.
Sc in each of the next 11 chains.
Work 4 sc in the last chain.
Rotate the work to crochet along the unused side of the foundation chain.
Sc in each of the next 11 unused chain loops.

Round 3: Ch 1. Repeat (sc in the next st, inc) twice, sc in the next 11 sts, repeat (sc in the next st, inc) 4 times, sc in the next 11 sts, and repeat (sc in the next st, inc) twice.

Join. (46 sts)

Do not fasten off.

Check the Size

Lay the sole flat without stretching.

Target measurements are approximately 3½–3¾ inches long and 1¾–2 inches wide.

If the sole is too small, try a slightly larger hook. If it is too large, try a slightly smaller hook.

Remake the sole and recheck before continuing. The second sole should match the first.

Part 2 — Build the Sides

Round 4: Ch 1. Working in BLO, sc in each st around. Join. (46 sts)

The back loop is the loop farther away from you along the top of the stitch. This round helps the sides turn upward from the sole.

Work through both loops again for the remaining rounds.

Round 5: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (46 sts)

Round 6: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (46 sts)

You should now have a shallow oval cup.

Part 3 — Shape the Puppy Toe

Round 7: Ch 1. Sc in the next 17 sts, hdc2tog 6 times, sc in the next 17 sts. Join. (40 sts)

The decreases bring the fabric together over the toe while leaving an ankle opening behind it.

Check your count after every round. If the shaping moves toward one side, confirm that you are starting in the first stitch and skipping the joining sl st.

Part 4 — Make the Ankle Cuff

Round 11: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (28 sts)

Round 12: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (28 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail.

Repeat Parts 1–4 for the second bootie.

Check the opening before adding the decorative details. The foot should pass through gently, without force.

Part 5 — Crochet the Floppy Ears

Make four ears with caramel yarn.

The ears are worked flat, starting at the lower tip and ending at the attachment edge.

Ch 3.

Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and in the next chain. (2 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. Inc in each st. (4 sts)

Rows 3–7: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st across. (4 sts per row)

Fasten off after Row 7, leaving a 10-inch sewing tail.

Each ear should measure approximately ¾ inch wide and 1¼ inches long.

Weave in the short starting tail. Leave the long finishing tail for assembly.

Set both booties upright with the toes facing you.

Finishing

Weave in the Ends

Turn each bootie gently inside out.

Weave all remaining tails through several stitches, changing direction before trimming. Check that the inside is smooth and free of loose loops.

Turn the booties right side out.

Shape the Pair

Round the toes with your fingers and arrange the ears.

If needed, wash according to the yarn label and gently shape while damp. Dry completely before use.

Do not stretch the ankle openings to force a larger fit.

Final Check

Compare both booties for sole size, eye placement, and ear position.

Finished Size

Target measurements for each bootie:

Sole length: Approximately 3½–3¾ inches (9–9.5 cm)

Ear length: Approximately 1¼ inches (3 cm)

Measure your finished pair. The interior space may be slightly smaller than the outside sole measurement.

Tips & Customization

Change the Puppy Colors

Try cream with caramel ears, oatmeal with chocolate ears, or pale gray with charcoal ears.
